Project 2011: Japan
Japan's earthquakes and tsunami has left drastic results on their northeastern shore. On March 11th, the island was struck by a massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake leaving many people injured, missing, dead, or without water and/or electricity. They are still trying to find survivors out of all the rubble and destroyed buildings and homes while at the same time facing nuclear crisis with their nuclear plant in Fukushima. Smaller-scaled earthquakes (around 5.0-6.0 magnitude) are still striking Japan as aftershock. Due to Japan’s current conditions, many companies are forced to shut down while survivors must seek for shelter, many without heat or enough water/food.
So far there are no statistics specifically on kids; reporters are also not allowed to interview the children.
However, it is known that many kids sat silently in their classrooms as the Earthquake hit, with many of the parents unable collect them when it was all over. Many of the kids are still separated from their families, not knowing if their parents/ family is still alive or dead. The same is with the parents who wish tell their kids they are all right, but there are no telephones available to speak to them. The schools currently have no running water, electricity or heat but is the home for hundreds of survivors
Currently, 10,000 people are reported missing in Ishinamaki and nearly 7,000 people are confirmed to be dead.
